story of calico

January 2022 | UltraSuperNew Gallery, Singapore

From 14 to 28 January 2022, UltraSuperNew (together with Critical Craft Collective) will present ‘the story of calico’, an exhibition that showcases the materiality of calico, its humble relationship to colonial routes, and its role in today’s context.

How would ‘the story of calico’ unfold as we reclaim ideas around intimacy/distance, repetition, rituals and domesticity in light of the pandemic? What is our relationship as makers to the environment? The exhibition brings together seven artists and a writer from different backgrounds who are focusing on craft, the techniques and processes of making, as well as myth-making and storytelling. The artists include Alpana Vij, Alysha Rahmat, Zulkhairi Zulkiflee, Homa Shojaie, Simon Ng, with an essay by Sam I-shan.

The range of works include objects, sculptures, tapestries, photo/image transfers, assemblage, and representational pieces.

the story of calico marks the official launch of the Critical Craft Collective Singapore, an initiative started by Adeline Kueh and Hazel Lim (the curators of the show) to investigate the relationships between craft and contemporary art, design and new technologies, leading to the formation of the Craft Council of Singapore in 2022.
